Sydney residents are witnessing an increased presence of heavily armed police officers in tourist hubs, sports venues, and religious sites. The implementation of the Armed Response Command (ARC) is a direct security response to the mass shooting that occurred at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach last December. During that incident, 15 people, including a 10-year-old girl, were killed, marking Australia’s most severe mass shooting in nearly 30 years.

The new unit consists of specially trained officers who are equipped with long-arm rifles and operate out of specialized vehicles. According to New South Wales police, the primary mandate of the ARC is to deter serious threats, including active shooter scenarios, and to provide a rapid response to potential violence. Detective Superintendent Andrew Evans stated that the initiative is founded on the objective of protecting human life.

The deployment has received mixed reactions from the public. While some locals find the presence of rifles on the streets unsettling, others have expressed that the visible security measures provide a sense of safety. The Jewish community, in particular, has largely welcomed the operation as a necessary step to address antisemitism following the tragedy. Alex Ryvchin of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry noted that while military-style weaponry on the streets is not a preferred sight, it is considered a necessary trade-off to prevent further loss of life.

However, the move has drawn criticism from human rights advocates. Amnesty International Australia has raised concerns regarding the potential “militarisation of policing.” Andrew Witheford, representing the organization, called for transparent oversight and clear regulations to ensure these expanded powers are not utilized to stifle peaceful protest. In response to such concerns, New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley defended the government’s actions, noting that the national outlook has been permanently altered since the December attack.

The judicial process regarding the tragedy is ongoing. One of the alleged gunmen, Naveed Akram, is facing 78 charges, including 15 counts of murder and a charge of committing a terrorist act. His father, Sajid Akram, who participated in the shooting, was fatally wounded by police during the event. The state police plan to expand the ARC unit to a total of 250 officers as part of their long-term commitment to public safety.
