Introducing Agentic Identity Broker: Streamlining OAuth Delegation for AI Agents

As AI agents become increasingly integrated into corporate workflows, the challenge of managing secure access to services has grown significantly. Jan, a co-author of the Agentic Identity Broker (AIB), recently introduced this MIT-licensed OAuth2 broker developed within the Zalando Incubator. The tool is designed to address the critical infrastructure gap regarding how AI agents handle user identity and authorization in professional environments.

AIB tackles three primary obstacles: preventing the over-sharing of user tokens with agents, bridging fragmented authorization systems, and centralizing audit logging and tool approvals. By implementing a broker-based architecture, the system allows users to delegate tasks to agents without exposing their primary credentials. Instead, the broker manages third-party tokens in an encrypted state, utilizing RFC 8693 token exchange via a gateway, such as Agentgateway, at the time of request.

This approach ensures that agents never directly handle sensitive user tokens, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers can focus on their core functionality without needing to manage complex OAuth 2.1 plumbing. Currently in version 0.1, the platform is already operational in production environments, supporting hundreds of agents and numerous internal and external MCP servers. While the current focus is on ‘on-behalf-of’ (OBO) scenarios where human users delegate tasks, the development roadmap includes support for headless agents—where machines invoke agents—and advanced intent-based authorization. The team is actively seeking community feedback to refine the user experience as they continue to build out this essential infrastructure.
