British adventurer Karl Bushby has walked across the Humber Bridge amid heavy mist, marking the concluding stretch of an epic 31,000-mile journey that began nearly three decades ago. The former paratrooper set off from Punta Arenas, Chile, in 1998 at the age of 29 with only a few hundred dollars, aiming to make his way back to the United Kingdom. Throughout the multi-decade expedition, Bushby adhered strictly to two personal conditions: he refused to utilize any vehicles for travel and vowed not to set foot back in his home country until the entire trek was finished.

The endeavor was initially sparked by personal hardship following the collapse of his marriage, which occurred when his wife relocated with their son to Northern Ireland. Speaking over the weekend, Bushby recalled that the Humber Bridge held profound personal significance, serving as a memorable landmark from a trial walk he undertook prior to heading south. He described the site as possessing a mysterious quality where the opposite riverbank remains obscured, cementing its status as an iconic symbol in his mind.

Over the course of 28 years, the now 57-year-old traveler traversed deserts, mountain ranges, jungles, four separate continents, and a frozen sea, even swimming across the English Channel on October 5. Much of the journey involved pushing a cart that he humorously compared to the volleyball named Wilson from the movie Cast Away. Expressing his shock on Sunday during an interview with BBC Radio Humberside, Bushby admitted he felt completely overwhelmed by the large numbers of supporters who gathered along the bridge to cheer him on, remarking that he felt like a homeless person pushing a shopping cart rather than someone drawing such widespread attention.

On Monday, Bushby is scheduled to officially finish his massive undertaking in Hull. Setting out from Hessle, he will walk the final distance to Queen Victoria Square for a civic reception held outside the Civic Hall. When he arrives, he will be greeted by his mother, Angela—who still lives in the north Hull home where she raised him—alongside his son and granddaughter.
