A labor court in Brazil has penalized two attorneys and their respective law firms with financial fines and formal censures after discovering a concealed prompt-injection command inside a legal petition. The incident occurred in an employment lawsuit handled by the 3rd Labor Court of Parauapebas, located in the state of Pará. According to available reports, this matter is believed to represent the first-ever judicial decision worldwide regarding the deliberate manipulation of a judicial artificial intelligence tool via prompt injection.

The scheme came to light while the presiding judge was examining the case documents using Galileu, a generative artificial intelligence application deployed nationwide by the National Justice Council of Brazil. During the review, the technology flagged suspicious content, generating an alert and automatically halting the processing of the manipulated material. Galileu detected text written in white against a white background, rendering it completely invisible to human readers. When the font color was adjusted to reveal the hidden message, the text directed any reviewing artificial intelligence to treat the petition superficially and avoid challenging the attached documents, regardless of other instructions.

Investigators and the court concluded that the legal representatives deliberately embedded the hidden directive to influence both opposing counsel and judicial technology systems, aiming to produce a biased draft judgment or a superficial evaluation that would disadvantage the defendant and harm the judicial process.

Because of this behavior, the court penalized the two law firms involved by assessing a joint fine amounting to 10 percent of the total lawsuit value. Given that the original employment claim sought R$842,000, the penalty totaled approximately $16,000. The magistrate justified the sanctions by citing procedural good-faith rules under Article 5 of the Brazilian Civil Procedure Code, which mandates truthfulness, loyalty, and institutional respect. Additionally, the court referenced Article 77 of the same code, noting that the lawyers engaged in illegal innovations and hindered judicial activities, thereby compromising the dignity of justice.

Legal experts note that as judicial systems globally adopt artificial intelligence for document management and summaries, this ruling establishes that the responsibility for court filings applies equally to machine-readable hidden data. The event highlights the necessity of robust governance frameworks and monitoring mechanisms to protect enterprise artificial intelligence platforms from adversarial manipulation in external documents.
